You Cannot Optimise Your Way Closer
Every other ranking factor in search can be improved. Distance cannot. If somebody searches from two miles away and your competitor is four streets from them, that competitor has an advantage no amount of work removes — and a great deal of local SEO advice quietly ignores this, then blames the content when the rankings do not move. The useful question is what remains once distance is taken off the table, and the answer is more than most local businesses ever use.

Six things that follow from a factor you cannot move
This sector has one of the highest conversion rates on the benchmark table — 12.34% — because somebody searching nearby for something nearby is close to buying. The constraint is that half the ranking decision was made before they searched.
- Distance cannot be optimisedThe one factor no amount of work changes
- Category choice caps your reachThe wrong primary category hides you entirely
- Prominence is off-siteReviews, citations, mentions · not your pages
- Some searches are not local at allAnd those are the ones distance cannot decide
- Photos and hours change behaviourMore than any wording on your website
- One location, one shotNo branch network to spread the risk across
The fourth row is where the opportunity actually is. Not every search that could bring you a customer has a place attached to it. Somebody researching whether a treatment is worth it, how to choose between two options, what something should cost, or whether a service suits their situation is not searching locally — and those results are decided on usefulness rather than distance. That is the ground a well-located competitor cannot take from you.
Win the searches that are not about where you are
The local pack is decided on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance you can influence through categories and what your profile and site describe. Prominence you can build through reviews, citations and being mentioned in places that matter locally. Distance you cannot touch at all. Once that is accepted, local SEO becomes a much clearer piece of work — you stop trying to beat geography and start competing on the two thirds that are actually available.
Category selection deserves more attention than it usually gets, because it is the cheapest and most consequential decision on the profile. The primary category largely determines which searches you are eligible for at all, and businesses frequently pick something that describes what they are rather than what people search for. A studio that teaches classes and a gym are different categories; so are a salon and a barber. Getting this wrong does not lower your ranking so much as remove you from the results entirely, which is why it is worth an hour of thought rather than a guess at setup.
Then there is the half of demand that has no location in it. People search whether a treatment works, how to choose between two services, what something typically costs, whether a course suits a beginner, how to prepare for an appointment. Those searches are not proximity-decided, so a business four streets closer has no advantage in them, and they reach somebody earlier in the decision. Almost no local business writes for them, because local SEO advice is overwhelmingly about the map.
The last structural point is that a single-location business has no way to diversify. A chain with forty branches can absorb one that underperforms. You cannot, which means the profile, the reviews and the site are not one channel among several — they are the business’s entire discoverability. That argues for doing a small number of things properly rather than a long list adequately.
- ✓Relevance and prominence, not distance — Two thirds of the decision is available. Compete there.
- ✓Category is the biggest single lever — The wrong one removes you from results rather than lowering you.
- ✓Non-local searches are ungeographic — A closer competitor has no advantage in them, and nobody writes for them.
- ✓Photographs and hours change behaviour — More than any sentence on your website does.
- ✓One location cannot diversify — No branch network to absorb a bad quarter. Fewer things, done properly.
You cannot rank your way to a better postcode. Everything else on the list is available, and most local businesses use about a third of it.
What local services SEO actually involves
The disciplines are the same ones on the rest of this site. These are the six places a fixed location changes how they are done.
Category & Profile Strategy
Choosing the primary and secondary categories that make you eligible for the right searches. The cheapest high-impact decision available, and usually made in thirty seconds at setup.
Prominence Building
Reviews, local citations, and being mentioned by organisations that matter in your area. This is the part of the ranking you can genuinely move, and it lives off your website.
Ungeographic Content
The searches with no place attached — is this worth it, how do I choose, what should it cost. Distance-proof, earlier in the decision, and almost universally unwritten.
Photography & Presentation
Real photographs of the actual place, current and plentiful. In this sector they influence the click more than anything written, and most profiles have four from 2019.
Hours, Attributes & Accuracy
Opening hours including holidays, accessibility, parking, payment, languages. Small fields that answer the question somebody actually had before deciding to travel.
Site Fundamentals
Fast, accessible, correct structured data, and a page that confirms what the profile promised. The site’s job here is confirmation rather than persuasion.
The constraint is identical. The demand is not
Every business here is chosen partly on how far away it is. What differs is how much demand exists that has nothing to do with distance.
Salons, barbers & beauty
High repeat, high review sensitivity, and a strong visual component. Photographs of actual work do more than any page copy.
Gyms, studios & fitness
Seasonal demand peaks in January and September, and a large body of ungeographic searches about whether a discipline suits a beginner.
Cafes, bakeries & food retail
Almost entirely proximity and photographs. The realistic ambition is being the obvious choice within a short radius rather than ranking widely.
Veterinary & pet services
Unusually high conversion and a huge volume of worried, ungeographic questions about symptoms and care, which almost nobody answers well.
Childcare & education services
Researched heavily and chosen carefully, with a long consideration period despite being intensely local.
Repair & specialist retail
Where distance matters least of all, because people will travel for genuine expertise if they can find evidence of it.
What we can and cannot claim here
The honest version. Our local search work is real; a client roster in these specific businesses is not.
We have not run SEO for a salon, gym or cafe
No case studies, no client names, no results on this page, because there are none.
Local search is a discipline we do work in
It has its own pages here for the UK and the USA, built from real market research rather than from a template.
What does transfer
Profile and category strategy, citation work, review structure, and the technical side. Those are the same wherever the business sits.
What does not
Knowing what a realistic cost per customer is in your particular trade, or how demand behaves in your specific area.
What that should mean for you
A local specialist agency in your town may know your market better than we do, and that is a legitimate reason to choose one.
Why the page exists
Because the distance constraint is real, most advice in this sector ignores it, and the ungeographic opportunity it points to is genuinely underused.

— Our Proprietary Methodology —
The Visibility Framework™, applied to local businesses
The method is the same one every engagement here runs on. For a local business, step one includes checking which categories you are actually eligible for — because that decides which searches you can appear in at all.
Visibility Score
We baseline the profile and the site together, and check your categories against the searches you want. Businesses are frequently ineligible for their best queries without knowing it.
Custom Strategy
A keyword and content roadmap scoped to your niche and budget — which pages to fix, which to build, and which terms are worth the money here.
Execution
Senior strategists implement technical fixes, content and links as one roadmap — no juniors, no outsourcing, no handoffs between departments.
Track & Improve
Monthly reporting and continuous optimization — we re-test what’s working, cut what isn’t, and adjust as the market moves.
Honest, No-Nonsense Commitment
No one controls Google or AI search — so we'll never guarantee a #1 ranking. What we do guarantee: we baseline your visibility at the start — where you rank on Google and whether AI answers cite you — and if that baseline has not moved in 90 days, the next 60 days are free.
Local services SEO pricing
Scoped by how competitive your area is and how much of the ungeographic demand is worth pursuing — you get the figure after a free audit, not before it. Prices below are USD; UK clients are quoted in GBP and Pakistani clients in PKR.

- Profile and category strategy
- Technical & structured data
- Monthly reporting

Enterprise
Multi-site local groups.

Single-location businesses rarely need a large retainer, and we would rather scope a short, decisive engagement than sell an ongoing programme where the work is mostly finite.
What you’re actually committing to
Most agencies keep this in a contract you only see after the sales call. We would rather you knew now, because it is the question everyone asks second — right after the price.
- A 3-month initial term, then month to monthLong enough for the 90-day guarantee above to mean something, short enough that you are not trapped if it doesn’t work out. The wider industry standard is 6 to 12 months.
- 30 days’ notice to stopNo exit fee and no buy-out of the months you haven’t used. You leave when you decide to, not when the contract lets you.
- No setup or onboarding feeThe audit is free, and month one costs exactly what month two costs. Nothing is front-loaded.
- You own everythingAnalytics, Search Console, content, accounts and any tooling set up for you — all in your name from day one, and all still yours if we part ways.
- One fixed monthly feeAnything outside the agreed scope is quoted and approved by you before it starts. It never appears on an invoice as a surprise.
- Reporting written to be readWhat changed, what it moved and what is next — in plain English, at the cadence set out in your plan, not a 40-page export nobody opens.
These are the terms as they appear in the agreement itself — nothing here is softened for the website. The full wording lives in our terms and conditions, and you get the agreement to read before anything is signed or invoiced.
What we will not do for a local business
Local search attracts more openly dishonest tactics than any other part of this industry, and almost all of them put the profile that earns the business at risk.
We will not create fake locations, use a virtual office as a business address, or add service-area listings for places you do not operate from. These are the most common local SEO tricks and they are explicitly against the rules for business profiles. The penalty is suspension of the listing, which for a single-location business is the discoverability of the whole company.
We will not write, buy or incentivise reviews. Beyond the policy position, a suspended profile in this sector is close to catastrophic, and there is no paid channel that replaces the map result.
And we will not build a page for every surrounding town. A business that people travel to has one location, and pretending otherwise is the doorway pattern with a service-area label on it.
- No fake or virtual addresses. Against the rules, and suspension removes your entire discoverability.
- No bought or written reviews. The penalty lands on the profile that earns the business.
- No page for every nearby town. One location is one location. The rest is a doorway pattern.
- Real, current photographs. Stock images of somewhere else are obvious and they cost trust.
- Hours must be true. Wrong holiday hours send somebody to a locked door.
