One Keyword, Two Customers Who Want Opposite Things

Somebody with water coming through a ceiling and somebody planning a bathroom in the spring type almost the same words into Google. The first will call whoever looks credible within about ninety seconds and will not read a word of your page. The second will compare six firms over three weeks and read everything. Most trade websites are built for one of them, usually the wrong one.

The Numbers First

Six things that follow from the emergency-planned split

The sector carries the second highest cost per click in search — $8.33 — because a job is worth a great deal. What that price does not tell you is that half the traffic behind it will never read your website.

  • The emergency does not compareFirst credible result, ninety seconds, phone call
  • The planned job compares for weeksSix firms, photographs, reviews, quotes
  • The map pack answers the emergencyYour website is not involved in that decision
  • Directories hold the planned searchCheckatrade, Which? Trusted Traders and similar
  • Seasonality is severeBoilers in November, roofs after a storm
  • Every job has a locationAnd that is how forty doorway pages get built

The last row is where trade websites do themselves the most damage. Every job is somewhere, so it feels obvious to build a page for each town in the coverage area. Forty near-identical pages later, the site has the pattern Google names explicitly in its doorway-page guidance, and the damage is not confined to those pages — the service pages that were working get pulled down with them.

Straight Talk

Build for the panic and the project separately

The emergency journey barely touches your website. Somebody searches, looks at the map results, checks that the reviews are real and the phone number is answerable, and calls. That whole sequence happens above the organic listings, on a profile you do not own, and it is decided by whether you are close, open, well reviewed and reachable. If you want emergency work, the investment is in the profile, the response time and the review volume — not in a longer page.

The planned job is the opposite in every respect. Somebody replacing a roof or fitting a bathroom is spending a significant amount of money on something they will live with for fifteen years, and they research accordingly: photographs of real work, what the process involves, how long it takes, what it costs, what goes wrong, what accreditations mean. That person will read three thousand words if the three thousand words are useful, and almost no trade website gives them anything to read.

The directories complicate the planned journey specifically. Checkatrade, Which? Trusted Traders and their equivalents rank strongly for the researched searches, and they carry the accreditation signals buyers are looking for. You will not displace them for their own terms, and you probably should not try. What you can do is be the result that answers the question they cannot — the actual detail of the work, photographed and explained by somebody who does it.

And there is a straightforward technical dividend most trade sites never collect. Photographs of completed jobs are the strongest evidence in this sector, and they are usually either absent or uploaded at full camera resolution to a page that then takes eight seconds to load on a phone in a driveway. Serving that photography properly is a small piece of work with disproportionate effect.

  • Emergency work is won on the profile — Close, open, well reviewed, answerable. Your website is barely involved.
  • Planned work is won on detail — Real photographs, real process, real prices. Almost nobody publishes them.
  • Directories hold the researched terms — Do not fight them. Answer what they cannot.
  • Do not build a page per town — Every job has a location. That is not a reason for forty pages.
  • Photograph the work properly — Strongest evidence in the sector, usually missing or eight megabytes.

Half your traffic will never read your website. The other half will read everything on it. Building for the average of those two people produces a site for neither.

What home services SEO actually involves

The disciplines are the same ones on the rest of this site. These are the six places two opposite customers change how they are done.

01

Map Profile & Emergency Path

Categories, service areas, hours, photographs and review volume. This is what wins urgent work, it sits entirely off your website, and it is usually half-finished.

02

Project Content for Researchers

What the job involves, how long it takes, what it costs, what can go wrong. The planned buyer will read all of it, and your competitors have written none of it.

03

Job Photography & Delivery

Real completed work, shot and served properly. The strongest evidence available in this sector and the most common cause of a slow site.

04

Accreditation Signals

Gas Safe, NICEIC, FMB and their equivalents, made explicit and machine-readable. Buyers check them, and directories rank partly because they display them clearly.

05

Seasonal & Weather Demand

Boiler searches spike in the first cold week; roof searches spike after a storm. Content has to be indexed before the weather, not written during it.

06

Service Area Structure

Real coverage stated clearly and once, rather than a page for every town. Getting this right is mostly about what you decide not to build.

Coverage

The split exists everywhere, at different ratios

Every trade here has both customers. What differs is which one dominates, and that decides where the budget should go.

Plumbing & heating

The most emergency-weighted trade of all. Profile, response time and reviews do nearly all the work; boiler replacement is the planned exception and it is worth real content.

Electrical

Split fairly evenly. Faults are urgent, rewires and installations are researched, and accreditation carries unusual weight because the risk is obvious to buyers.

Roofing

The highest job values in the sector at five to fifteen thousand, and weather-driven demand spikes. Photography of completed roofs is the single strongest asset.

Heating, ventilation & cooling

Seasonal at both ends of the year, with a growing researched segment around efficiency and heat pumps that almost nobody has written for.

Building & renovation

Almost entirely planned. Long consideration, large budgets, and a buyer who will read everything you publish and then check it against three other firms.

Landscaping & outdoor

Strongly seasonal and highly visual. Portfolio quality does more than any keyword, and demand collapses in winter regardless of what you do.

Who We Work With

What we can and cannot claim here

The honest version, and shorter than the equivalent on our fintech or SaaS pages because it has to be.

We have not run SEO for a trade business

No case studies, no client names, no results on this page. There are none to give.

We have built for a trade business

A trade client in Pakistan on the web development side. “They handed over the hosting, the domain and the code in my name on day one.” That is build experience, not search experience.

What does transfer

Local search structure, map profile work and the technical side of image-heavy sites. Our local SEO discipline pages are the deeper resource.

What does not

Knowing how trade work actually arrives, how the directories behave in your area, and what a realistic cost per lead looks like in your trade.

What that should mean for you

If a trade client roster is what you need, weigh it fairly. Plenty of agencies specialise in this sector and that is a reasonable preference.

Why the page exists

Because the intent split described above is real, most trade sites get it wrong, and a page explaining it honestly is more use than an empty URL.

What clients say

Named clients, named companies — published with their permission.

— Our Proprietary Methodology —

The Visibility Framework™, applied to trades

The method is the same one every engagement here runs on. In trades, step one includes deciding which of the two customers you actually want more of — because the answer sends the budget to completely different places.

Step 01

Visibility Score™

We baseline the site and the map profile together, and split your existing search demand into urgent and researched. That ratio usually decides the whole plan, and most firms have never seen it.

Step 02

Custom Strategy

A keyword and content roadmap scoped to your niche and budget — which pages to fix, which to build, and which terms are worth the money here.

Step 03

Execution

Senior strategists implement technical fixes, content and links as one roadmap — no juniors, no outsourcing, no handoffs between departments.

Step 04

Track & Improve™

Monthly reporting and continuous optimization — we re-test what’s working, cut what isn’t, and adjust as the market moves.

Honest, No-Nonsense Commitment

No one controls Google or AI search — so we'll never guarantee a #1 ranking. What we do guarantee: if your visibility score doesn't improve within 90 days, we keep working at no extra cost until it does.

Trade engagements are frequently smaller than the sector’s click prices suggest, because the emergency half is won on a profile rather than on a retainer. We would rather say that than sell against it.

What you’re actually committing to

Most agencies keep this in a contract you only see after the sales call. We would rather you knew now, because it is the question everyone asks second — right after the price.

  • A 3-month initial term, then month to monthLong enough for the 90-day guarantee above to mean something, short enough that you are not trapped if it doesn’t work out. The wider industry standard is 6 to 12 months.
  • 30 days’ notice to stopNo exit fee and no buy-out of the months you haven’t used. You leave when you decide to, not when the contract lets you.
  • No setup or onboarding feeThe audit is free, and month one costs exactly what month two costs. Nothing is front-loaded.
  • You own everythingAnalytics, Search Console, content, accounts and any tooling set up for you — all in your name from day one, and all still yours if we part ways.
  • One fixed monthly feeAnything outside the agreed scope is quoted and approved by you before it starts. It never appears on an invoice as a surprise.
  • Reporting written to be readWhat changed, what it moved and what is next — in plain English, at the cadence set out in your plan, not a 40-page export nobody opens.

These are the terms as they appear in the agreement itself — nothing here is softened for the website. The full wording lives in our terms and conditions, and you get the agreement to read before anything is signed or invoiced.

No Pretending

What we will not do for a trade business

This is the sector where doorway pages are sold most often, because the pitch writes itself: every town you cover, a page each, ranked everywhere. It does not work and it is actively dangerous.

We will not build a page for every town in a coverage area. It is the example Google uses when describing doorway pages, the resulting pages do not rank, and the damage extends to the service pages that were earning. Where a town genuinely matters and you have nothing specific to say about it, the honest output is a clearly stated service area, not forty URLs.

We will not display accreditations you do not hold. Gas Safe, NICEIC and their equivalents are all publicly checkable in seconds, buyers do check them, and in several trades displaying one falsely is a legal matter rather than a marketing one.

And we will not write or solicit fake reviews. In a sector where the emergency customer chooses almost entirely on review volume and recency, this is heavily tempting and heavily policed, and the penalty lands on the profile that was winning the work.

  • No page for every town. The textbook doorway example, and the damage reaches the pages that worked.
  • No accreditations you do not hold. Checkable in seconds, and in some trades a legal matter.
  • No fake or incentivised reviews. The emergency customer chooses on reviews. The penalty lands there.
  • Real photographs of real jobs. Stock images of somebody else’s work are transparent to buyers.
  • We say we have not done trade SEO. Build experience is not search experience.

Home services SEO questions, answered

Should we build a page for every town we cover? +
No, and this is the most common and most damaging piece of advice sold in this sector. Google’s own doorway-page guidance uses exactly this pattern as its example: many near-identical pages, each aimed at a location, all leading to the same service. The pages do not rank, and the harm is not limited to them — the service pages that were earning get pulled down alongside. The alternative that does work is one strong page per service, a clearly stated coverage area, and genuine local content only where you actually have something specific to say about a place.
Almost entirely off your website, which is worth accepting before spending money on the site for it. The emergency customer looks at the map results, checks that the reviews are numerous and recent, confirms you are open and close, and calls. That decision is made on your business profile, not your pages, and it is influenced most by review volume, response speed, opening hours and how complete the profile is. If urgent work is what you want, the investment is in getting reviews consistently, answering the phone, and keeping the profile accurate — not in more content.
Detail that nobody else publishes. Somebody spending eight thousand pounds on a roof wants to know what the process involves, how long it takes, what the price depends on, what goes wrong, what the guarantee actually covers, and what completed work looks like. That is a long page and most trade sites have a paragraph. It works because the buyer is genuinely researching — they will read all of it — and because it demonstrates competence in a way a claim cannot. Photographs of your own finished work carry more weight than any wording on the page.
Not for their own terms, and it is not worth the budget to try. The directories rank because they aggregate many verified traders with reviews and accreditation displayed clearly, which is what those searches reward. What you can do is be the more useful result for everything they cannot answer: the specifics of the job, real photographs, honest pricing guidance, and the questions people ask before they choose anyone. It is also worth having a good presence on the directories themselves, since buyers use them — competing with them and appearing on them are not mutually exclusive.
Severely, and it needs planning rather than reacting. Boiler and heating searches spike in the first genuinely cold week; roofing spikes after storms; landscaping collapses in winter. The mistake is publishing seasonal content when the season starts, by which point the demand is already being served by pages that were indexed weeks earlier. Content should exist and be established ahead of the demand, on a permanent URL updated each year rather than a new page annually — an established page with history outperforms a fresh one every time.
Indirectly and meaningfully. They are not a ranking factor in themselves, but they are exactly the kind of trust signal Google’s quality guidance asks about — evidence that a real, verifiable, competent organisation stands behind the page — and they strongly influence whether somebody chooses you once they land. Making them explicit and machine-readable rather than a row of logos in a footer is cheap work with a good return. What matters far more is that they are genuine: they are publicly checkable in seconds, and buyers check.
Serve them properly rather than remove them, because in this sector the photographs are the evidence. The usual fault is uploading straight from a camera, so a page carries several eight-megabyte images and takes many seconds to load on a phone in somebody’s driveway — which is exactly where it is being read. Correct dimensions, modern formats, lazy loading below the fold and a fast first image fix it without touching the quality anyone can see. It is one of the highest-return technical jobs on a trade site.
Not search work, no, and we would rather say so. We have built a website for a trade business in Pakistan, which is development experience rather than SEO experience, and our local search work is the more relevant background. What we would be learning from you is how work actually arrives in your trade and area, how the directories behave there, and what a realistic cost per lead looks like. If a trade-specialist agency is what you want, that is a fair preference and there are good ones.
