Financial Services & Adviser SEO

A Local Business, Inside the Most Scrutinised Category Google Has

An adviser firm competes over a few miles like any local business, and is judged by Google like a medical site. Those two facts pull in opposite directions: local search rewards proximity and a complete profile, while Your Money or Your Life scrutiny rewards demonstrated expertise and a named human being behind every claim. Most firms in this sector do neither properly, which is the whole opportunity.

The Numbers First

Two ranking systems pulling opposite ways

An adviser firm is being judged twice at once, by two systems that want different things. Almost every SEO plan we see for this sector answers one of them and ignores the other, which is why so many of them produce impressions and no enquiries.

  • Local wants proximityDistance is a stated map-pack factor · and unchangeable
  • YMYL wants demonstrated expertiseWho wrote it, and why they are qualified to
  • Local wants a complete profileCategories, services, hours, reviews — not the website
  • YMYL wants accuracy that can be checkedFigures, dates and terms that are current, not approximate
  • Local rewards review volumeSteady flow · and you may not incentivise or gate them
  • Compliance limits what any of it may sayFinancial promotions are regulated · sign-off is a real gate

The third row is the one most often missed entirely. For an adviser firm, a large share of enquiries is decided in the map pack before a website is opened at all — and the map pack is driven by a Google Business Profile that nobody in the firm has touched since it was verified. That is not a website problem, which is exactly why a website-only SEO plan does not fix it.

Straight Talk

Our clients are fintech. This sector is adjacent, and we will say so

The named financial clients on this site — Tap Global, Husky Finance, Strabo — are fintech: technology companies selling financial products. They are claimed on our fintech page and they are not IFAs, wealth managers or pension advisers. We are not going to imply otherwise on a page aimed at advice firms, because in this sector a quiet overstatement about who you have worked with is exactly the thing a careful buyer checks first.

What transfers is the constraint rather than the client list. Both sides of this sector are regulated, both are judged by Google as Your Money or Your Life, and both live with the fact that a marketing claim needs approval before it goes out. Years of working inside that is the relevant experience, and it is genuinely relevant — but it is not the same as saying we have run a campaign for an IFA practice.

What is different, and where an advice firm needs different work, is that fintech is a national product business and an adviser firm is a local advice business. A payments company competes with everyone in the country; a chartered financial planner competes with four other practices within twenty miles, and loses most of that competition in a map result rather than on a page.

The other difference is scale. Fintech marketing teams have a content function and a compliance function. An adviser practice frequently has neither, and the website was built once by somebody who has since left. That changes the sequence entirely: the profile and a handful of genuinely useful pages come long before a content programme.

  • Named clients are fintech — Tap Global, Husky Finance, Strabo. Claimed on the fintech page, and not advice firms.
  • The regulation transfers — Both sides are YMYL, both need sign-off before publishing. That experience is real.
  • Fintech is national, advice is local — One competes with the country, the other with four practices in twenty miles.
  • The map pack decides most of it — And it is a Business Profile problem, not a website problem. Most firms have never touched theirs.
  • Usually no marketing team — Which changes the order of work: profile and a few real pages before any content programme.
An advisory meeting in progress around a table

A chartered planner is not competing with the internet. They are competing with four practices within twenty miles, and losing most of it in a map result nobody in the firm has looked at.

What the work is for an advice firm

Six pieces, in the order they usually matter. The first two are not on your website at all.

01

Google Business Profile

Categories, services, hours, photos and posts on the profile registered to your own address. For most adviser firms this decides more enquiries than the website does, and it is usually untouched since verification.

02

Reviews, Earned Properly

A system for asking every client and responding to all of them. We do not write, buy or gate reviews — and in a regulated sector an incentivised review is a problem well beyond Google’s policies.

03

Authorship & Credentials

Who advises, what they are qualified as, and where that is stated — on the page, in the structured data, and consistently everywhere else you appear. In a YMYL category this is ranking work, not an about page.

04

Service & Question Pages

A page per thing you actually advise on, answering the question a client asks in the first meeting. Most adviser sites have four pages of adjectives where they need eight pages of answers.

05

Review Dates on Everything

Allowances, thresholds and rules change every year. A page quoting last year’s figure is wrong rather than merely dated, and in this sector wrong is a compliance matter before it is an SEO one.

06

Technical Foundations

Indexation, speed and rendering. Usually the smallest job on this list for an adviser site, and it is listed last on purpose rather than sold first.

Coverage

Different practices, different search behaviour

These are not variations of one plan. The buyer arrives differently in each, and the balance between local work and content work moves with it.

Independent financial advisers

The most local of the group. A handful of practices within travelling distance, enquiries decided in the map pack, and referral still the largest channel. Profile before pages.

Wealth management & planning

Longer consideration, higher value per client, and a buyer who reads several sites before making contact. Authorship and demonstrated expertise do the heavy lifting.

Accountants & tax advisers

Highly seasonal demand around filing deadlines, and a buyer comparing on service rather than price. Question pages earn their place here more than anywhere else in the sector.

Mortgage & protection brokers

The most competitive search category of the group, with national comparison sites holding the head terms. Local and specialist queries are where a broker can actually win.

Pensions advice

Handled here rather than on a page of its own, because the search demand does not justify one and a thin page would be a doorway page. The work is the same: a profile, clear credentials, and pages answering what people actually ask about transfers, consolidation and drawdown — each with a review date, because the rules move annually.

Insurance brokers

Comparison sites dominate the obvious queries, so the winnable ground is specialist and commercial lines where a real explanation beats a quote form.

Who We Work With

When this is worth doing

Advice firms are frequently sold SEO that was designed for a national product business. It is worth being clear about when search is the right channel here at all.

A practice with no map presence

The clearest case and the fastest return. If your Business Profile is incomplete and your competitors’ are too — which is common — the map pack is available for the cost of doing it properly.

Specialists with a niche

Advising on something specific enough to name. A page about that competes with almost nobody, while a page about “financial advice” competes with everybody and a comparison site.

Firms whose referrals have plateaued

Where search is genuinely additive rather than replacing something that works. Referral will usually still be the larger channel, and that is fine.

Practices with real expertise to show

Where a partner will put their name and qualifications on a page and answer a question properly. That is the single strongest asset in a YMYL sector, and most firms leave it in a drawer.

When we would say do not bother

A firm at capacity, or one whose clients all arrive through professional introducers. Search will not beat an introducer relationship, and we would rather say so than take a retainer.

When compliance is the bottleneck

If nothing can be published without a six-week review and nobody owns that process, the content plan will not happen. Fix the process first or scope the work around it honestly.

— Our Proprietary Methodology —

The Visibility Framework™, applied to an advice firm

The method is the same one every engagement here runs on. For an adviser practice step one looks at the Business Profile before the website, because that is where most of the enquiries are being decided.

Step 01

Visibility Score™

We baseline your map-pack positions from inside the area you actually serve, your Business Profile completeness and review profile, alongside index coverage and rankings — because for most advice firms the profile is the larger of the two and the one nobody is watching.

Step 02

Custom Strategy

A keyword and content roadmap scoped to your niche and budget — which pages to fix, which to build, and which terms are worth the money here.

Step 03

Execution

Senior strategists implement technical fixes, content and links as one roadmap — no juniors, no outsourcing, no handoffs between departments.

Step 04

Track & Improve™

Monthly reporting and continuous optimization — we re-test what’s working, cut what isn’t, and adjust as the market moves.

Honest, No-Nonsense Commitment

No one controls Google or AI search — so we'll never guarantee a #1 ranking. What we do guarantee: if your visibility score doesn't improve within 90 days, we keep working at no extra cost until it does.

For most advice practices the entry tier plus a properly run Business Profile is the honest scope. Where a firm is competing nationally on a specialism, the work looks more like the fintech engagements on this site.

What you’re actually committing to

Most agencies keep this in a contract you only see after the sales call. We would rather you knew now, because it is the question everyone asks second — right after the price.

  • A 3-month initial term, then month to monthLong enough for the 90-day guarantee above to mean something, short enough that you are not trapped if it doesn’t work out. The wider industry standard is 6 to 12 months.
  • 30 days’ notice to stopNo exit fee and no buy-out of the months you haven’t used. You leave when you decide to, not when the contract lets you.
  • No setup or onboarding feeThe audit is free, and month one costs exactly what month two costs. Nothing is front-loaded.
  • You own everythingAnalytics, Search Console, content, accounts and any tooling set up for you — all in your name from day one, and all still yours if we part ways.
  • One fixed monthly feeAnything outside the agreed scope is quoted and approved by you before it starts. It never appears on an invoice as a surprise.
  • Reporting written to be readWhat changed, what it moved and what is next — in plain English, at the cadence set out in your plan, not a 40-page export nobody opens.

These are the terms as they appear in the agreement itself — nothing here is softened for the website. The full wording lives in our terms and conditions, and you get the agreement to read before anything is signed or invoiced.

No Pretending

What we will not do in a regulated advice sector

We will not imply we have clients we do not have. Our named financial clients are fintech, they are listed as such on our fintech page, and nothing on this page should be read as a claim to have run an IFA practice’s campaign. In a sector where the buyer’s job is checking claims, that seemed worth stating first rather than in small print.

We will not touch reviews. Not writing them, not buying them, not asking only the clients likely to leave a good one. All three violate Google’s policies, and in a regulated sector an incentivised testimonial is a problem for your firm long after the ranking has gone.

We will not write around a compliance objection. If a sentence cannot be approved, the answer is a different sentence and not a cleverer one. And we are not compliance advisers — nothing here is legal or regulatory advice. What we do is write so the review is short, and plan the calendar around the fact that review exists.

And we will tell you when search is not your channel. A practice at capacity, or one fed entirely by professional introducers, will not beat those relationships with a website. That has been the honest answer before and it will be again.

  • We will not imply clients we lack. Our named financial clients are fintech. This sector is adjacent and the page says so.
  • No written, bought or gated reviews. A policy violation everywhere, and worse than that in a regulated sector.
  • We do not write around compliance. A different sentence, not a cleverer one. And we are not compliance advisers.
  • Review dates on anything with a figure. Allowances and thresholds move annually. Stale is wrong, not merely old.
  • We will say when search is not it. A practice at capacity or fed by introducers does not need a retainer.

Financial services questions, answered

Have you worked with IFAs or wealth managers before? +
Our named financial clients — Tap Global, Husky Finance and Strabo — are fintech: technology companies selling financial products rather than advice practices. We ran dedicated fintech and financial-services marketing for several years before those engagements, so the regulated-sector experience is real. But we are not going to imply an IFA client list we do not have, on a page aimed at exactly the kind of buyer whose job is to check that sort of claim.
Your Money or Your Life is the category Google uses for content that can materially affect someone’s finances, health or safety, and it applies its strictest quality expectations to it. For an adviser firm that means demonstrated expertise, clear authorship with real credentials, accuracy that can be checked, and evidence that a genuine and reputable organisation stands behind the page. It is the reason an anonymous 800-word article about pension transfers does not rank however well optimised it is.
For most single-office practices, the profile — and it is not close. A large share of local enquiries is decided in the map pack before any website is opened, and Google states that map-pack position is driven by relevance, distance and prominence rather than by the things that rank a web page. The profile also tends to be the easier win, because a striking number of competing practices have never touched theirs since verification. The website matters, and it usually matters second.
Because the search demand does not support one and a thin page would be a doorway page, which Google names in its spam policies. Pensions advice is covered on this page instead, and the old /pensions-marketing-agency/ URL redirects here. The work is identical to the rest of the sector — profile, credentials, and pages that answer what people actually ask about transfers, consolidation and drawdown — with the additional discipline that every figure needs a review date, because the rules change annually.
By involving whoever signs off at the drafting stage rather than at the end, which is the single largest difference between a two-week and a two-month publishing cycle. Most rewrites in regulated sectors are caused by a claim that was never going to be approvable appearing in a first draft. Pages written with the constraint in mind — specific, sourced, no unsupported superlatives — typically pass first time. If nobody owns the review process at all, that is worth fixing before the content plan, not after it.
We will build the system that earns them and we will not touch the reviews themselves. That means asking every client at the right moment, making it easy, and responding to all of them. We do not write reviews, buy them, or ask only the clients likely to leave a good one — all three are policy violations, all three are detectable, and in a regulated sector an incentivised testimonial is a problem that outlives any ranking it bought.
Give every page carrying an allowance, threshold, rate or rule an owner and a review date, and treat the date as part of publishing rather than as maintenance. It is the most common fault we would expect to find on an adviser site, and it is worse here than elsewhere: a page quoting last year’s figure is not dated, it is wrong, and wrong is a compliance matter before it is a ranking one.
Possibly not, and we would rather say so. Search will not out-compete a working professional-introducer relationship, and a firm at or near capacity has no problem for a retainer to solve. Where search earns its place is as an additional channel when referrals have plateaued, or when you have a specialism specific enough that the people looking for it cannot find you. If neither is true, spend the money elsewhere.
