Most Wix SEO Advice Is Ten Years Out of Date

Wix was genuinely bad for search once, and the industry has not updated its opinion. The things it was blamed for — unreadable URLs, no control over crawling, no say in your own meta tags — are the things it fixed. Meanwhile Wix owners are still being told to replatform by people working from what they learned in 2015, and paying for migrations nothing on their site required.

The Numbers First

Six complaints, and two still stand

These are the objections a Wix owner actually hears. Four of them describe a platform that no longer exists; two are current. Check each against your own account rather than against anybody’s article, this one included — the whole point of this page is that written advice about Wix dates badly.

  • “The URLs are unreadable”Out of date · that convention was retired years ago
  • “You cannot control crawling”Out of date · crawl and index controls are exposed now
  • “You cannot write your own meta tags”Out of date · titles, descriptions and canonicals are yours
  • “You cannot redirect anything”Out of date · 301s are managed in the dashboard
  • “It is slow”Stands. The heaviest of the four platforms we see
  • “URL prefixes are fixed”Stands. Collections sit under paths you did not choose

The two that stand are worth taking seriously and neither is a reason to leave on its own. Speed is improvable within the platform and has a ceiling; fixed collection prefixes constrain architecture in the same way Webflow’s two-level limit does. Everything above them was a real criticism once and repeating it now is just an agency that stopped reading.

Straight Talk

The stale reputation costs more than the platform does

A business on Wix that is not ranking gets told the platform is the reason, and it is a comfortable answer for everyone involved — it explains the problem without anyone having to audit anything, and it comes with a project attached. In our experience the actual causes are almost always the same ones we find everywhere else: pages that answer no query anyone types, titles nobody wrote, and no internal linking to speak of.

The test is simple and it is worth applying to any agency, including us. Ask which specific Wix limitation is holding your site back, and ask them to name it. If the answer is a general reputation rather than a control they can point at in your dashboard, the diagnosis has not happened yet.

What is genuinely true is that Wix sites are heavy. The platform builds on a JavaScript framework that does more work in the browser than the alternatives, and on Core Web Vitals a Wix site typically starts behind an equivalent Webflow or Squarespace build. That is improvable — image weight, apps you installed and forgot, third-party embeds — and it has a ceiling you will eventually meet.

The other live constraint is structural. Collections put their items under a fixed path prefix you did not choose, which limits how a topical hierarchy can be expressed — the same category of problem as Webflow’s two-level limit, arriving from a different direction. For most small business sites it never binds. For a content programme with real depth, it will.

  • Ask which limitation, specifically — If the answer is a reputation rather than a control in your dashboard, nobody has audited anything.
  • Speed is the real one — Wix sites are heavier than the alternatives. Improvable, with a ceiling you can meet.
  • Fixed collection prefixes — Items sit under a path you did not choose. The same shape as Webflow’s depth limit.
  • The usual causes are usual — No demand behind the pages, no titles written, no internal linking. Platform-independent, all three.
  • A migration is not a strategy — Moving a site that was never going to rank produces a faster site that still does not rank.

Ask any agency which specific Wix control is holding your site back, and ask them to point at it in your dashboard. A reputation is not a diagnosis.

What we do on a Wix site

Six pieces. Two address the constraints that are actually current; four are the work that would matter on any platform.

01

Weight & Core Web Vitals

Image sizes, apps installed and never removed, third-party embeds and anything loading on every page for a feature used on one. The live constraint on this platform, and the one with the most room in it.

02

Structure Within Fixed Prefixes

Working out what your hierarchy can be given that collection items sit under paths you did not choose — and carrying the rest of it through internal links, which is how search engines read hierarchy anyway.

03

Titles, Descriptions & Canonicals

All yours on Wix, and on most sites still unwritten. Ours is the cautionary case: 24 ranking pages with no description at all and sitewide click-through of 0.13%.

04

Content Against Real Demand

Whether the pages you have answer anything anybody searches for. Platform-independent, and the most common actual cause of a Wix site not ranking.

05

Internal Linking

Which of your pages your own site treats as important. Unconstrained here, skipped almost everywhere, and among the cheapest gains available on any site.

06

Local & Business Profile

Most Wix sites belong to local businesses, and for them the Google Business Profile decides more enquiries than the website does. It is not a Wix lever at all, which is why it is so often missed.

Coverage

Where the constraints actually bite

Whether anything on this page costs you depends almost entirely on what you are asking the site to do.

Local service businesses

The largest group by far, and the one where none of the live constraints matter. The Business Profile decides most enquiries and the website supports it.

Sole traders and small shops

Where Wix earns its place: a site the owner can change without calling anybody. That is worth more than a faster site nobody can edit.

Wix Stores

Workable at modest catalogue size. Variants and filtering bring the same URL arithmetic every platform has, with fewer levers than WordPress and about as many as Squarespace.

Content-led sites

Where the fixed collection prefixes start to constrain a hierarchy, and where the weight penalty compounds across many pages. Worth planning around early.

Sites told to migrate

The reason this page exists. Before moving, find out whether a specific control was the obstacle — because a migration that does not fix the actual cause produces a faster site that still does not rank.

Who We Work With

When Wix is the right answer

This page defends the platform against stale criticism. That is not the same as saying it fits everything.

A site one person maintains

The best argument for it, and the same one that applies to Squarespace. A site the owner can update beats a technically superior one that needs a developer for every change.

Local businesses

Where the map pack does most of the work and the website supports it. None of the live Wix constraints touch that.

Getting online quickly

Where the alternative is no website for three months. A live Wix site earning enquiries beats a perfect one still in design.

When we would suggest Webflow

Design-led marketing sites needing control over markup and layout, and a lighter starting point on Core Web Vitals.

When we would suggest WordPress

Serious publishing with many authors and real taxonomies. Its defaults cause the problems on our WordPress page and its editorial depth is unmatched.

When leaving is genuinely right

A content programme deep enough that fixed prefixes constrain it, or a performance requirement past the platform’s ceiling. Both are real. Neither is “Wix is bad for SEO”.

— Our Proprietary Methodology —

The Visibility Framework™, applied to Wix

The method is the same one every engagement here runs on, with one question asked first: whether anything about Wix is actually the obstacle, or whether it has simply been assumed to be.

Step 01

Visibility Score

We baseline your rankings, index coverage and Core Web Vitals from your own data — and establish whether a specific platform control is limiting you or whether the site would rank no better anywhere else.

Step 02

Custom Strategy

A keyword and content roadmap scoped to your niche and budget — which pages to fix, which to build, and which terms are worth the money here.

Step 03

Execution

Senior strategists implement technical fixes, content and links as one roadmap — no juniors, no outsourcing, no handoffs between departments.

Step 04

Track & Improve

Monthly reporting and continuous optimization — we re-test what’s working, cut what isn’t, and adjust as the market moves.

Honest, No-Nonsense Commitment

No one controls Google or AI search — so we'll never guarantee a #1 ranking. What we do guarantee: we baseline your visibility at the start — where you rank on Google and whether AI answers cite you — and if that baseline has not moved in 90 days, the next 60 days are free.

Investment

Wix SEO pricing

Scoped by what the site is trying to do rather than by the platform. The work here is weight, content, structure and internal linking — real work, and rarely an enterprise scope. Prices below are USD; UK clients are quoted in GBP and Pakistani clients in PKR.

Most Wix sites belong on the entry tier, and for local businesses a large part of the return comes from the Business Profile rather than from the website at all.

What you’re actually committing to

Most agencies keep this in a contract you only see after the sales call. We would rather you knew now, because it is the question everyone asks second — right after the price.

  • A 3-month initial term, then month to monthLong enough for the 90-day guarantee above to mean something, short enough that you are not trapped if it doesn’t work out. The wider industry standard is 6 to 12 months.
  • 30 days’ notice to stopNo exit fee and no buy-out of the months you haven’t used. You leave when you decide to, not when the contract lets you.
  • No setup or onboarding feeThe audit is free, and month one costs exactly what month two costs. Nothing is front-loaded.
  • You own everythingAnalytics, Search Console, content, accounts and any tooling set up for you — all in your name from day one, and all still yours if we part ways.
  • One fixed monthly feeAnything outside the agreed scope is quoted and approved by you before it starts. It never appears on an invoice as a surprise.
  • Reporting written to be readWhat changed, what it moved and what is next — in plain English, at the cadence set out in your plan, not a 40-page export nobody opens.

These are the terms as they appear in the agreement itself — nothing here is softened for the website. The full wording lives in our terms and conditions, and you get the agreement to read before anything is signed or invoiced.

No Pretending

We will talk you out of the migration

If you came here because somebody told you to leave Wix, the first thing we will do is find out whether they were right, and most of the time they are not. A migration carries real risk — our own migration page exists because that risk is routinely underestimated — and moving a site whose actual problem is that its pages answer no query produces a faster site that still does not rank.

What we will ask them, and what you should, is which specific control is the obstacle. Not “Wix is limited”. Which setting, which behaviour, which thing your dashboard will not let you do. If nobody can name it, the diagnosis has not happened.

Where the answer is real we will say so plainly. A content programme deep enough that fixed collection prefixes constrain the hierarchy, or a performance requirement past what the platform can reach, are both genuine reasons to move — and we would rather establish that in an audit than after you have paid for the rebuild.

And the ordinary limits apply here as everywhere else: no bought links, no doorway pages, no invented reviews. A platform argument is not a substitute for the work.

  • Name the limitation. A reputation is not a diagnosis. Ask which control specifically, ours included.
  • Most migrations here are unnecessary. A faster site that answers no query still ranks for nothing.
  • Speed is the real constraint. Wix sites are heavy. Improvable, with a ceiling worth knowing about.
  • Check your own account. Wix has changed a great deal. Verify capabilities there rather than in any article.
  • Local? The profile matters more. For most Wix businesses the Business Profile decides more enquiries than the site.

Wix SEO questions, answered

Is Wix bad for SEO? +
It was, and the criticism has outlived the problem. The specific things Wix was blamed for — unreadable URLs, no control over crawling, no say in your own titles and descriptions, no way to redirect anything — are the things it has since addressed. What still stands is that Wix sites are heavier than the alternatives and that collection items sit under fixed path prefixes. Neither is a reason to leave on its own, and neither is what most people mean when they repeat that Wix is bad for SEO.
Probably not, and we will usually try to talk you out of it. Ask whoever recommended it to name the specific control that is holding your site back — not a general limitation, an actual setting your dashboard will not let you change. If nobody can name one, the site is not ranking for the reasons sites usually do not rank: pages answering queries nobody types, titles nobody wrote, no internal linking. A migration fixes none of those, and it carries its own risk.
Heavier than the alternatives, yes, and this is the criticism that still holds. The platform does more work in the browser than Webflow or Squarespace, so an equivalent build typically starts behind on Core Web Vitals. There is usually real room to improve within it — image weight, apps installed and forgotten, third-party embeds loading on every page for a feature used on one — and there is a ceiling you can eventually meet. We measure on your actual field data rather than a lab score, because the two frequently disagree.
Page URLs, yes. Collection items — blog posts, store products — sit under a fixed path prefix you did not choose, and that is the structural constraint that genuinely persists. In practice it limits how deep a topical hierarchy can go, which is the same category of problem Webflow has with its two-level Collection limit. For most small business sites it never binds. For a real content programme it will, and it is worth knowing before you build one.
They fail differently rather than better and worse. WordPress hands you every control and wrong defaults, so the work is removing URLs nobody wrote. Webflow gives clean output with URL structure fixed at build time. Squarespace keeps the technical layer under its own control, so the work is content and settings. Wix is the heaviest but has quietly fixed most of what it is still criticised for. For a site one person maintains, that last point matters more than the ranking difference between any of them.
Yes, and the engagements are usually shorter and cheaper than on other platforms — which is the honest shape of the work rather than a discount. The scope is weight and Core Web Vitals, titles and descriptions, content against real demand, internal linking, and for local businesses the Google Business Profile, which is where most of their enquiries are decided regardless of what the website does.
In your own dashboard, and this is worth doing before you accept anyone’s account of it including ours. Wix has changed a great deal over the past few years and written advice about it dates faster than for any other platform on this site — which is precisely the argument this page makes. If a proposal depends on a control nobody has confirmed you have, it has a hole in it.
With whether anybody searches for what your pages answer, which is the first question anywhere and the one most often skipped. Then whether your titles and descriptions are written — ours were not, on 24 ranking pages, at 0.13% click-through. Then internal linking. Only after those three is it worth asking whether the platform is doing anything to you, and by then you will usually have found the actual reason.
